Question: When using my MDI 2, the MDI Launcher lists the MDI serial number, but displays “UPDATE PC S/W” underneath it. I’ve tried different versions of the MDI Launcher:
- Versions 9.xxx do not detect the MDI.
- Versions 8.xxx display the “UPDATE PC S/W” message.
I’ve tested this on both Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) without success.
Solution 1: For Original GM MDI 2
- Confirm the MDI Manager Version:
Ensure you’re using the latest version of the GM MDI Manager, as this is crucial for compatibility with your MDI 2. - Understand the Issue:
The “UPDATE PC S/W” message indicates a firmware mismatch between the MDI 2 hardware and the MDI Manager.- If the MDI firmware is newer than the Manager, you’ll need to update the Manager.
- If the MDI firmware is older, you may need to downgrade the firmware.
- Put the MDI 2 in Factory Mode:
- To force a firmware update or downgrade, switch the MDI 2 to Factory Mode:
- Step: Press and hold the power button until the device enters recovery mode.
- Follow on-screen prompts in the MDI Manager to update or recover the firmware.
- To force a firmware update or downgrade, switch the MDI 2 to Factory Mode:
- Update Firmware:
- Use the GM MDI Manager to update the firmware to the correct version.
- If a direct update fails, perform a downgrade by keeping the device in recovery mode and allowing the Manager to flash an older compatible version.
Solution 2: For Clone MDI 2
- Use the Correct Software:
- Clones often work better with the GM MDI Manager (intended for the original MDI) rather than the GM MDI 2 Manager.
- Recovery Mode:
- Put the MDI 2 into Recovery Mode:
- Press and hold the power button for approximately 10 seconds until the unit enters recovery mode.
- Open the MDI Manager and let it recover the unit.
- This process typically takes about 3 minutes.
- Put the MDI 2 into Recovery Mode:
- Test the Connection:
- Once the recovery process completes, restart both the MDI 2 and the PC.
- Verify that the MDI Launcher now recognizes the device without the “UPDATE PC S/W” error.
