How to Check the Spark Plug on John Deere 100 Series Tractors

Regular spark plug inspection helps keep your John Deere 100 Series tractor running smoothly. Follow the steps below for safe and proper maintenance.

Steps:

  1. Park the tractor safely

    • Refer to the Parking Safely section of your operator’s manual.

  2. Allow the engine to cool

    • Never work on a hot engine.

  3. Open the hood

    • For V-twin engines, there will be one spark plug on each side.

  4. Disconnect spark plug wire(s) (A)

    • Gently pull the boot off the spark plug.

  5. Remove the spark plug(s)

    • Use a spark plug socket and wrench.

  6. Clean the spark plug

    • Use a wire brush to carefully remove carbon deposits and dirt.

  7. Inspect the spark plug

    • Look for:

      • Cracked porcelain

      • Pitted or worn electrodes

      • Any other visible damage

    Replace the spark plug if defects are found.

  8. Check spark plug gap (B)

    • Use a wire feeler gauge.

    • Adjust the outer electrode if needed.

    • Correct gap: 0.76 mm (0.030 in.)

  9. Reinstall the spark plug(s)

    • Tighten to 20 N·m (15 lb-ft) torque.

  10. Reconnect spark plug wire(s)

    • Push the boot back firmly onto the plug.

  11. Close the hood
