Fault Description:
The Engine Control Module (ECM) triggers this fault when:
- The 8-volt supply exceeds 8.5 VDC for more than one second.
- The ECM has been powered on for more than three seconds.
Component Overview:
The accelerator pedal position sensor sends throttle position signals to the ECM. It generates a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal—expressed as a duty cycle—ranging from 3% to 100%, based on the pedal’s position:
- At low idle: 10%–22% duty cycle
- At full throttle: 75%–90% duty cycle
The sensor is directly mounted on the pedal assembly and powered by the ECM via connector P1-4 to terminal “A” of the sensor. It requires no manual calibration. If the sensor fails or becomes miscalibrated, the entire pedal assembly must be replaced, as adjustments are not possible.
Note: If the engine is using the ECM’s dedicated PTO (Power Take-Off) functions and the “PTO Configuration” is enabled, the accelerator pedal sensor will be ignored while in PTO mode.
Common Causes of the 8 Volt Supply High Fault:
- Loose or damaged ECM connections
- Faulty accelerator pedal position sensor or harness
- Wiring issues between the ECM and the pedal sensor
- Internal ECM malfunction
- Defective accelerator pedal assembly
Recommended Diagnostic Steps:
- Inspect ECM Connectors: Ensure all ECM harness connections are secure, clean, and undamaged.
- Check Sensor and Harness: Visually inspect the accelerator pedal sensor and its wiring harness for signs of damage or wear.
- Test Voltage Output: Measure the sensor supply voltage at the connector. If it consistently exceeds 8.5 VDC, further investigation is needed.
- Examine Wiring Continuity: Use a multimeter to test for short circuits, open wires, or high resistance between the sensor and ECM.
- Replace Components: If the sensor or pedal assembly is faulty or miscalibrated, replace it. If no fault is found in wiring or sensors, the ECM may need replacement.
By carefully following these steps, you can effectively identify and resolve the 8-volt supply high fault in the Caterpillar C9 engine system.
